We’re happy to help you safely and securely destroy your confidential papers at the shredding event location. To make sure your visit goes smoothly, here’s what you should know before arriving.
1. What You Can Bring
You may bring paper documents that contain personal, financial, or confidential information such as:
- Bank statements
- Tax records
- Medical records
- Utility bills
- Old files, mail, or paperwork you no longer need
- Junk Mail
- Manila Folders
- Spiral Notebooks
- Envelopes
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- 3-Ring Binders Up To 1” Thick
- Accordion Files
- Credit & Debit Cards
**When In Doubt, Shred It**
You don’t need to remove staples, paper clips, rubber bands, binder clips, and hanging folders. Our powerful commercial shredders will tear through them.
2. What to Bring Your Documents In
You may bring paper documents in just about any container you want as long as they are easy to pick up. The containers will be returned to you after they are emptied. Examples of the containers are:
- Boxes
- Plastic Bags
- Canvas Bags
- Reuseable Grocery Bags
- Plastic Tubs, Totes or Containers
- Small Trash Containers
- Buckets
- Backpacks
- Suitcases
3. What Not to Bring
Please do not bring any of the following items, as they can damage the shredding equipment:
- Wet or Moldy paper.
- Three-ring binders over 1 “or plastic folders with metal rings
- Large metal objects
- Glass
- Batteries, electronics, or hard drives (unless the event specifically allows them)
- Liquids
If you’re unsure about an item, just ask one of our technicians when you arrive — we’ll be happy to help.
3. How the Event Works
- Arrive During the Posted Event Hours
Follow the event signage or staff directions to the shredding area. - Stay in Your Vehicle (if drive-through)
Most shredding events are designed to be drive-through for safety and efficiency.
Our staff will remove your boxes or bags of papers for you. - Your papers will be placed in secure bins.
FileShred will provide a number of bins that will be lined up in front of the shredding truck ready to take your documents.
- Your Documents Get Shredded Right Away
After each bin has been filled it will be moved to our truck where it will be lifted, emptied and all the documents shredded. - All Paper is Recycled
After shredding, the shredded paper is baled and recycled to make new paper products — nothing goes to waste.
4. How to Prepare Before You Come
- Remove your papers from binders or heavy plastic covers.
- Sort out any non-paper items (CDs, floppy disks, electronics, etc.).
- Pack your papers into boxes, paper bags, or small containers that you can lift easily.
- Label them “To Be Shredded” if they’re stored with other household or office items.
- Arrive early if possible — events are popular and sometimes fill up quickly!
5. Event Guidelines
- There may be a limit on how many boxes or bags each guest can bring.
- Please respect posted hours — once the truck reaches capacity, shredding must stop.
- Our trained technicians are there to ensure everyone’s safety and confidentiality.
- You’ll receive friendly assistance from FileShred staff and event volunteers.
